Dining in the North End sucks! I can't tell you the number of times I've gone there to eat and end up leaving the restaurant extremely disappointed. Tonight I went to dinner at Davide. Now, it was recently renovated and the menu was developed with the help of Chef Ramsay form Hell's Kitchen, so I had expected better. First, it was a hike from the T stop (15 minute walk) in the freezing cold. The place wasn't that crowded. There was a kid in the coat closet, who I had watched leave the closet, go into the bar to grab a soda and go back into the closet (very weird). Then he left the closet and made his way into the kitchen. We get seated and they wanted to take our coats, after closet boy, glad we decided to keep them with us (especially since I didn't bring a purse and kept all my stuff in my coat pockets). We wait forever to get menus and are asked if we want a drink before even receiving the drink menu. The music they are playing is skipping like the CD got stuck. It's dark and the decor reminds me of going back into time. The bread comes and my friend doesn't have a bread plate hiding under her napkin like I did. We waited awhile for our soup to arrive and my minestrone looked like it was just chopped onions and celery with some orzo pasta. I tell ya, the Progresso Minestrone soup I get was better than the one at the restaurant. Our meals arrive and we are not asked if we want cheese on it, so we have to flag down our waitress. My friend got 4 raviolis (that was their portion- about $4 a ravioli) and I got a bowl of butternut squash risotto. I wasn't a fan, and think the butternut squash risotto I made a few months ago was way better. The restaurant's was too sweet and wasn't rich like I had hoped, even with the extra cheese on it. The Chianti was good, I have a hard time finding reds I enjoy, but their $7 Chianti I enjoyed. When the bill came I used my $40 Groupon and we split the rest down the middle so $13 and some change, only when I got my credit card and receipt to sign, it read $133 and change, so I had to flag down the waitress to get that corrected. My friend shot this photo of me sitting at the staged window display when we were leaving b/c I felt like being cheesy and somewhat adventurous (yes, climbing into a display would not be something I would normally do). I don't plan on eating in the North End again, anytime soon (of course pastries and coffee I'm not disappointed with so I can do cafe's there). I did enjoy stopping for a latte at one of the many cash only cafes on Hanover Street and for a moment felt as if I were actually back in Italy. My restaurant rating for Davide is a 2 out of 5 and that's only b/c I liked their wine. I think it is overly priced and was not satisfied with my experience tonight.
